Benefits of Upgrading to Mini Pleat Air Filters

For most commercial and industrial settings, mini pleat HVAC filters are a direct upgrade with no compromises. Here are the major benefits you can typically expect:

  • Reduced risk of harmful mold and microbial growth
  • Lower energy and utility costs thanks to larger surface area
  • Strong, durable construction to ensure maximum filter lifespan
  • Available in a large range of depths to perfectly suit your filter racks
  • Effective option for medium- and high-efficiency filtration requirements

Common Applications

With their larger surface area and improved filtration capabilities, mini pleat air filters are a smart choice for many environments. Some of the most common are:

  • Commercial office buildings
  • Hotels and hospitality venues
  • Museums and archival facilities
  • Manufacturing plants and factories
  • Airports and transportation centers
  • Food and beverage processing plants
  • Pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities
  • Research and developmental laboratories
  • Hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare settings
  • Data centers that house delicate, dust-sensitive equipment
  • Retail environments (both standalone stores and shopping malls)

Definitions and Types of Mini Pleat HVAC Filters

Before you stock up on pleated filters, you need to know about the variety of types available. Not every kind of mini pleat HVAC filter is suitable for every kind of HVAC system and environment.

The first type to know is MERV filters. Short for “Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value,” a filter’s MERV rating is chosen based on how effectively the filter traps pollutants and particles. The scale runs from 1 (the lowest amount of filtration) to 20 (the highest amount).

Next up is DOP, an acronym for “Dispersed Oil Particulate.” DOP is a method of testing a filter’s integrity and efficiency. You’ll see filters with names like “DOP95,” which is why it’s crucial to understand this term.

A DOP95 filter, for example, has been proven 95% effective at removing particles .3 microns in size.

HEPA is another acronym you’ll see often, and it stands for “High Efficiency Particulate Air.” HEPA filters are designed, produced, tested, certified, and labeled according to current HEPA standards. According to the EPA website (https://www.epa.gov/), HEPA filters can, “…theoretically remove at least 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and any airborne particles with a size of 0.3 microns (µm). The diameter specification of 0.3 microns corresponds to the worst case; the most penetrating particle size (MPPS). Particles that are larger or smaller are trapped with even higher efficiency. Using the worst case particle size results in the worst case efficiency rating (i.e. 99.97% or better for all particle sizes).”

Lastly, the acronym ULPA is short for “Ultra Low Penetration Air.” ULPA filters utilize a very fine, random microfiber mesh to remove 99.999% of airborne particles that are .12 microns in size or larger, regardless of whether those particles are mold, bacteria, dust, or any other material.

Gasket Configuration to Suit Your Specific Needs

We can’t talk about mini pleat HVAC filters without also touching on gasket configuration. Gaskets ensure a complete seal and don’t let dirty air bypass the filters.

There are three main gasket configurations:

  • Upstream – Gasket is placed on the side of the filter where air enters, which blocks incoming air from bypassing around the edges
  • Downstream – Gasket is placed on the side where air exits, which forces filtered air along its intended path without any escaping
  • Both sides – Gaskets are placed on both sides of the filter (this is common in environments where maximum air purity is critical)

No matter what specific configuration you need for your facility’s mini pleat air filters, you can count on R.P. Fedder.

FAQS About Mini Pleat HVAC Filters

What is a mini pleat air filter?

A mini pleat air filter is a specific type of filter, most often made with fiberglass or other synthetic components. The filter is pleated, or folded, into a tight, even pattern, creating a bigger surface area than non-pleated options.

The pleats create more opportunities for trapping airborne particles and pollutants. Plus, these filters are expressly designed not to strain your HVAC system or reduce airflow. They’re overall a highly effective, modern, and energy-efficient option than non-pleated filters.

Are more pleats in an air filter better?

Generally, yes, more pleats in an air filter are better. A pleated air filter, like an accordion, has more surface area than a non-pleated option. More surface area means more pollutants—as well as smaller particles—can be caught by the filtration meshwork.

As a result, you can almost always expect both better air quality and improved HVAC system performance from a filter with more pleats.

Do pleated filters reduce airflow?

It’s technically possible for pleated air filters to reduce airflow, but in practice, the small reduction is virtually undetectable. Today, manufacturers use modern innovations to prevent these potential issues.

Almost all pleated filters are designed in such a way that they won’t reduce or restrict airflow to an impactful degree. Said another way, your HVAC system won’t suffer as a result of choosing compatible pleated filters.

How long do pleated air filters last?

Depending on your facility’s environment and the seasonal climate, pleated air filters can last anywhere between three months and one year.

The particular type of filter is also a factor. Deep pleat filters can often function well for up to a full year, while 1-inch filters typically last for closer to 90 days.
